Tyree S Washington is a multi 400m World Champion in Track and Field, Junior College 400m National Record Holder, 3-time US National Champion in the 400m, the youngest 400m runner ever to beat Michael Johnson, 2-time Goodwill Games Silver Medalist in the 400m/200m, 2003 he went undefeated in the 400m indoor and outdoor becoming the number one ranked 400m runner in the world. He made his dream become a reality in 1999 by signing a NFL contract to play for the San Diego Chargers and he released his autobiography, “Against all Odds” in 2020 to share his life story with the world. Washington was told by many doctors as a child that he would never be able to play sports due to his severe asthma but instead of playing it safe by not being physically active Washington used the doubt as fuel to become a professional athlete in two sports.
After a long successful career as a professional athlete, Washington shifted his talents to create his nonprofit Athletes vs Asthma Inc in 2021. Washington created the 02 Power Games which promotes children and teens to be more physically active by interacting in athletic events to boost their self-esteem and overall health. When Washington played professional football, he had a playbook to let him know what routes to run and what type of formation he should be in. His playbook helped set him up for success.
Kids who have asthma also need a playbook to help set themselves up for success by knowing what foods to eat, how many rescue inhalers should be around the house, how to dress in chilly weather etc. Washington has experienced many asthma attacks throughout his life and wants to do whatever he can to help children and teens minimize having asthma attacks so they can have a better quality of life. Washington is a huge advocate for mental health and believes many children and teens with asthma suffer with depression, loneliness, low self-esteem suicidal thoughts etc. Children and Teens need an outlet to unload so he and AVA make it a priority to give children and teens motivational talks, advice, the necessary resources, and encouragement to help them live a heathier and happier life.
